eSIM for the UK: coverage and what to expect

Black cabs, the Tube, and one thing worth knowing if your home SIM is from elsewhere in Europe.

A London street with a red double-decker bus and the city skyline behind

The UK is one of the 34 countries euRoam covers (31 on the cheaper euRoam Last Call), connecting automatically to whichever partner network below has the strongest signal wherever you land - London, Edinburgh, or somewhere in between.

Why this one's worth checking before you assume you're covered

Since the UK left the EU, it's no longer covered by the EU's "roam like at home" rules - the regulation that lets an EU SIM use its normal data allowance for free anywhere else in the EU. Whether your home carrier includes the UK for free is now entirely down to that carrier's own policy rather than a legal guarantee, and it varies a lot: some still bundle it in, plenty don't, and a few charge a daily add-on fee just for crossing the Channel. Worth checking your specific plan's terms before you assume London works the same way Paris or Berlin does on your home SIM - a standalone eSIM sidesteps the question entirely with one flat, known price.

Getting around and staying connected

The Tube's mobile signal is patchy underground on older lines but generally fine street-level and on the Overground - nothing specific to eSIM there, it's the same for every phone regardless of SIM type. Contactless payment for buses and the Tube doesn't need data at all, but having maps and a live departures board on hand makes the difference between a smooth transfer and standing on a platform working it out.
